Karting Graduate Hickin Joins Hillspeed For Ginetta Winter Series
Front-running Ginetta Junior team Hillspeed is delighted to confirm its entry into this coming weekend’s three-round ATL Racing Fuel Cells Ginetta Junior Winter Series, which will take place at Rockingham on Saturday, 10th November, after signing a deal with karting graduate Piers Hickin.
Hickin, who will celebrate his 16th birthday this Wednesday, will make his car racing debut with the multiple championship-winning squad off the back of a successful karting tenure in which he won races in Rotax Mini Max and also claimed the 2009 Forest Edge club title in the same class.
Beginning his motorsport career in the ranks of Honda Cadet two years prior, the Knaphill teenager made a great start by winning the Buckmore Park Summer Championship in the eight to 13-year-old Junior Club series. He then achieved more success in the 2007/2008 Winter Championship with a brace of title victories – in the eight to 13-year-old class and also the 11 to 16-year-old class.
Winning the Honda Cadet Southern Championship at Forest Edge in 2008, Hickin then progressed into Rotax Max the following year. Over the last couple of seasons though, the youngster has been focusing on his GCSE studies rather than racing so has had only a handful of competitive outings.
“I’m really excited to be driving with Hillspeed in the Winter Series and looking forward to a great weekend at Rockingham”, said Hickin, “We haven’t got any expectations, we’re just aiming to do as well as we can and to learn as much as possible ahead of next year. Hillspeed is a great team, with a lot of success in Ginetta, so I know I’m in the best place to start my car racing career.”
Hathersage-based Hillspeed, which won the Ginetta Junior Winter Series in 2010 with Seb Morris before guiding the Welshman to the main season title the following year, has high hopes for its new signing who has shown a lot of promise so far in winter testing.
“Piers has shown a lot of ability so far, in the short time he’s been part of the team, so we’re looking forward to working with him at Rockingham”, commented team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “I’m sure it’ll be a tough championship, Ginetta Junior is never easy, but Piers will undoubtedly make very strong progress over the course of the three rounds. He’s definitely a top young prospect.”
As well as running Hickin in the ATL Racing Fuel Cells Ginetta Junior Winter Series at Rockingham, Hillspeed’s Protyre Formula Renault BARC Winter Series with Michelin squad will also be in action for the final two rounds of that campaign.
Former Ginetta Junior Winter Series Champion George Gamble goes into the event fifth overall in the standings, having made an excellent single-seater debut in Protyre Formula Renault BARC during the opening two rounds of its Winter Series at Brands Hatch a fortnight ago. Gamble will be joined by Matt Rao, who was unable to contest the Brands Hatch races after a hefty qualifying accident.
Ginetta Junior qualifying will begin at 09.00 on Saturday, 10th November, with the Formula Renault session following at 09.25. Race one of the Ginetta Junior Winter Series will get underway at 11.10 with race two taking place at 13.40 and race three at 16.00. Round three of the Formula Renault BARC Winter Series will start at 11.40 with the fourth and final round beginning at 14.10.
