Spanish motor racing sensation Pepe Massot will step-up into the Ginetta GT Supercup this year after today, Friday, 18th January, becoming Hillspeed’s first driver signing for the team’s maiden campaign in the high profile British Touring Car Championship support category.
Having announced its intention to expand into Ginetta’s flagship category only a month ago, the title winning Ginetta Junior and Protyre Formula Renault squad is delighted to have retained the services of Massot who made his car racing debut with the Hathersage team last year.
Proving an absolute revelation in the ranks of Ginetta Junior, where he won the Rookie title and claimed numerous class victories alongside two sensational outright wins in 2012, Barcelona-based Massot will undoubtedly be one to watch in his first season driving a rear-wheel drive Ginetta G55.
“Moving into Ginetta GT Supercup was something we were eyeing throughout last year”, explained Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw , “It was all dependant on having a driver who we felt would be suitable for the car and one who could help continue the long running success Hillspeed has enjoyed in every championship we’ve raced in. Pepe is definitely that driver.
“We were delighted with the superb performances he delivered during his debut season in Ginetta Junior with us last year. It’s been clear for a while Pepe wants to try and make a career in sportscars so the GT Supercup is the natural step for him. We feel Pepe will do an excellent job this season and we’re looking forward to a successful 2013 with him, our debut year in the championship.”
Massot certainly arrived with an impact during his maiden car racing campaign, and UK circuit debut, last year by securing a top six finish during the opening event of the season. On only his second weekend, the young Spaniard climbed the overall podium for the first time with an excellent second place finish in round four and from there he never looked back.
“I am very enthusiastic about racing in GT Supercup”, said the talented 17-year-old, “Just a year ago, when we started our UK adventure, we didn't know if we would reach the end of the Ginetta Junior season. Now I’ve already finished it and I’m focusing on a new challenge, it's absolutely fantastic.
“This will be a very important year for me and, for sure, Ginetta GT Supercup is going to be very tough but with the experience we acquired in 2012 we hope it will be a great year. I have only had chance to drive a G55 once, in bad weather at Silverstone, and I really enjoyed it. It can sound crazy but I felt I was driving a G40 on steroids – similar handling, but everything exponentially increased!”
Massot added: “After a year racing in the UK with Hillspeed, I have found my second family. They embraced me and everyone around me, the relationship we have with every single guy at Hillspeed is just unbelievable. They all have my faith for 2013 and we believe it’s going to be a fantastic year.”
The opening rounds of the Ginetta GT Supercup will take place at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit in Kent over Easter weekend, 30th/31st March.
