TOP EIGHT FINISH FOR BRAZILIAN ROOKIE CARDOSO AT DONINGTON

21 Apr 2014

Harry Mailer - Donington Park

Brazilian car racing rookie Pedro Cardoso secured his second top eight finish in as many race meetings during round four of the 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship at Donington Park on Sunday, 20th April, to edge closer towards the coveted top 10 in the driver standings for Hillspeed.

Taking 13th position overall, seventh in the Rookie Cup, during round three on Saturday, 19th April, the 14-year-old’s improved eighth place result in the weekend’s second encounter, fifth in the Rookie classification, brought with it an impressive turn of speed – Cardoso lapping just 0.1 seconds shy of outright top four pace.

Team-mate Harry Mailer had a more challenging Donington experience, but the British rookie still posted two solid points finishes. His best result of the weekend also came in the televised fourth round on Sunday afternoon where he bagged a top 15 finish, just shy of the Rookie Cup top 10.

“Pedro and Harry both made progress again this weekend, staying out of trouble and clocking up the mileage which is so vital for rookie drivers”, said Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “We are aware the next round at Thruxton will be exceptionally difficult as they didn’t attend the test day there. After that, though, the subsequent events will allow them to show what they have learnt.”

Beginning round three from 12th position overall, Cardoso traded positions with William Taylforth over the first few laps and was up into 11th on lap two before slipping back to 12th soon after. On lap eight, he was nudged back another spot to 13th place where he remained to the finish on lap 11.

Mailer, lining-up 15th on the grid after qualifying just 0.4 seconds slower than his team-mate, was elbowed back to 18th over the first couple of laps but climbed back into 17th on the third tour and then took 16th position on lap 10. On the run to the line on the final lap, though, he was pipped for the place by a mere 0.092 seconds.

In Sunday’s race, Cardoso put together a terrific opening lap to move up from 13th position into the overall top 10 and then moved into ninth and eighth over the course of the next two laps. Taking seventh at mid-distance, he was shuffled back a place on the following tour and went on to end the race little more than a second shy of the top six on the tail of Jonathan Hadfield and Taylforth.

In Mailer’s case, round four was another consistent showing and from 14th on the grid he climbed as high as 12th position by lap two. Although dropping back to 16th into the final few laps, he was able to work his way into the top 15 by the finish.

Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire will host rounds five and six of the 2014 Ginetta Junior Championship season over the weekend 3rd/4th May. Before then, Hillspeed’s BRDC Formula 4 Championship team will begin its season this coming weekend, 26th/27th April, at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit.
