CONSISTENT WEEKEND FOR MAILER BAGS DOUBLE ROCKINGHAM POINTS SCORE

8 Sep 2014

First year Ginetta Junior Championship racer Harry Mailer produced two highly consistent points finishes for Hillspeed during rounds 15 and 16 at Rockingham International Super Sportscar Circuit over the weekend, 6th/7th September, after one of the most promising outings of his rookie season.

As the sole runner for the Hathersage team at the Northamptonshire track, Mailer carried the squad’s hopes well and was on course for a career-best top 10 finish in the opening encounter on Saturday until an unfortunate error proved costly. Even so, 14th position in each of the races marked a good return to action for the teenager after sitting-out the previous rounds at Knockhill.

“We’ve had two good, consistent races from Harry this weekend which is very pleasing”, said Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “He’s now finding his feet with the pace and is trying to mix-it with some of the more experienced drivers which is great to see.

“This season was never going to be anything other than a learning year, and a challenging one at that, but he’s building his pace now. To race inside the top 10 as he did this weekend was great, unfortunately a mistake in race one cost him what I’m certain would have been a top 10 finish. We could have then built on that in race two, but he’s still had two good results.”

Qualifying 16th fastest for round 15 on Saturday, Mailer made the most of an action-packed first lap to rocket into ninth position but on lap three a spin at Deene, while dicing with Jonathan Hadfield, led to a slip down to 17th place.

Moving back into 16th position at mid-distance, the Hillspeed teenager managed to break back into the top 15 on the final tour. Then, post-race, he was elevated into 14th position when James Kellett was handed a 30 second time penalty for a false start.

Beginning Sunday morning’s race from the eighth row of the grid in 16th position, Mailer made a good start and avoided any issues on the opening lap to make his way into the top 15. Although nudged back to 16th place on the second tour, he profited from a mid-pack shuffle on lap three to climb into 13th position but was elbowed down to 15th place on lap four.

Working his way into 13th again into the closing stages, Mailer came under increasing pressure from race one rival Hadfield and unfortunately had to succumb on the penultimate tour – eventually finishing in 14th place once more.

Rounds 17 and 18 of the Ginetta Junior Championship season, the penultimate event of the 2014 campaign, will take place over the weekend 27th/28th September at Silverstone National Circuit. The weekend prior, 20th/21st September, Hillspeed’s BRDC Formula 4 Championship squad will return to action at Donington Park in Leicestershire.
