Mexican teenager Alfredo Zabalza has become Hillspeed’s third signing for the new BRDC Formula 4 Championship season after today, Friday, 4th April, confirming his graduation from karting to cars with the leading Derbyshire team.
Completing a truly cosmopolitan line-up at the Hathersage squad, 17-year-old Zabalza joins Brazilian category podium finisher Gustavo Lima and promising Malaysian racer Rahul Raj Mayer as the start of the 2014 campaign edges ever closer.
Zabalza arrives in BRDC F4 as a three time, back-to-back Mexican Rotax Max Karting Champion having won the title in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was also 12th overall in the World Championships last year, capping off a very strong formative career.
“We’re so pleased to secure Alfredo as Hillspeed’s third signing for F4 this year, he’s a very promising young driver and brings a lot of success from karting in Mexico”, commented team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, “For the second year of F4, we really wanted to put together an exciting international line-up and we’ve managed to achieve that with Alfredo joining Gustavo and Rahul.
“It’s fantastic to have our full line-up confirmed well in advance of the opening event at Silverstone and we’re looking forward to seeing Alfredo in the car for the first time. It’s going to be a challenging season for him, there are a number of fast and experienced drivers in F4 again this year, but I’m sure Alfredo has what it takes to become a consistently strong competitor as the season progresses.”
Starting out in karts at the tender age of five-years-old, the South American won his first karting title in 2007 with the Mexican Easy-Kart crown and in 2011 he then added his first Rotax Max success to his CV as well as the Un Mexicano Rumbo F1 title.
As well as continued Rotax Max Championship glory over the next two seasons, Zabalza competed in the Rotax Max Euro Challenge in 2013 in addition to the Rotax Pan-Am Shootout and the Rotax Max Grand Finals in New Orleans, USA.
“I am very proud to race with one of the best teams in Formula 4 and very excited about the coming year”, said the Mexican youngster, “I hope to learn a lot and improve as much as I can as this season is going to be very important for me. Racing against some of the best drivers from Europe and across the world is always a big challenge but I’m confident I can have a strong year.”
Rounds one, two and three of the BRDC Formula 4 season will take place at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit on 26th/27th April. Television highlights of the first three races of 2014 will be screened a week later on ITV4 and ITV4 HD in the UK.
