Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing is delighted to this morning, Wednesday, 14th December, confirm its second signing for next year’s BRDC British Formula 3 Championship after putting pen to paper with American racer Chase Owen.

The 24-year-old from Houston in Texas, who has only been racing competitively at any level for a couple of years, will make the step-up into British F3 after a terrific campaign with Cliff Dempsey’s Formula Ford team in 2016 during his first full year of action in the UK.

Putting together an outstanding campaign, Owen became Avon Tyres BRSCC Formula Ford 1600 Northern Champion, won the Star of Anglesey accolade and also secured the Champion of Oulton Park title.

Additionally, the American was Vice-Champion of the Avon Tyres Formula Ford 1600 National Championship, capping a tremendously successful season, and is now set to make the leap into the world of top-line Formula 3 racing.

“With the little experience Chase has, he really did impress everyone this year in Ford”, said Dempsey, “He only started racing two years ago, this season was his first proper full year and he did a fantastic job for us – it was a brilliant season.

“Next season will be a big learning year for him and he’ll be starting from quite a way back compared to the karting and racing experience of the others. He’s learnt all about the mechanical grip in Ford this year, now he has to adapt to the aero in F3 and the big step up in fitness which is required. There’s a lot of work to do, but he’s gone well in the couple of days of testing we’ve done so far.”

Owen arrived on British shores after similarly impressing in his homeland, becoming a Team USA Scholarship candidate, winning the Skip Barber Indycar Academy Shootout Championship and claiming the Vice-Champion title in the Skip Barber Summer Series – taking 11 wins and a total of 19 podiums from 22 races contested in the latter.

Looking ahead to Owen’s debut in British F3, Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw said: “We are absolutely delighted to have finalised a deal with Chase to be part of our British F3 team and it’s fantastic to have two driver deals completed this side of Christmas.

“From what I’ve seen of his performances with Cliff’s Formula Ford team this year, and from the glowing praise I’ve heard as well, Chase is a talented, committed and quick driver. Next year will be a big step up in competitiveness, but we’re very much looking forward to him teaming with Jordan [Cane] in 2017 and progressing strongly as the season goes on.”

“I am beyond excited to compete next year in British F3”, said an ecstatic Owen, “I am certain it is a huge step up but it will prove an invaluable training ground and stepping stone into the higher-level formulae. Signing for the team was a no-brainer for me as I raced Formula Ford under Cliff in 2016 and he has taught me much of what I know in my short career, and has become like family to me.

“In the few test days I've run in the F3 car, I couldn't be more happy with the entire team and how the car feels. It’s by far the most powerful car, combined with the most aero, I have ever driven. I am so excited to get 2017 pre-season testing underway and have full confidence we will be competing with the best.”

With two seats filled for next season’s BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing now has just one berth remaining for the 2017 campaign.
