Consistently Strong Showing AT British F3 Media Day Gets Official Pre-Season Off To Great Start For Hillspeed

6 Mar 2019

Hillspeed enjoyed an extremely positive start to the official BRDC British Formula 3 Championship pre-season at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit on Tuesday, 5th March, where Thai star Sasakorn ‘Cutter’ Chaimongkol more than confirmed his 2019 credentials with an outstanding performance.

Ending the ‘Media Day’ test at the Hathersage squad’s ‘home’ track sixth overall for the day, Chaimongkol was in the mix in each of the three sessions. Lapping second fastest in the opening run, he then topped the times in session two before ending the day sixth in session three.

Starting off with a lap of 1m24.851 seconds (105.53mph) in the first 55 minute session, only a tenth of a second shy of the pace, in session two he posted a best time of 1m24.916 seconds (105.45mph) to lead the way by almost 0.2 seconds.

In session three, the 19-year-old topped the timesheets for much of the run and chalked-up his best lap of the day, 1m24.570 seconds (105.88mph) which ultimately placed him sixth overall. Having lost a couple of tenths of a second on his quickest lap to a slower car, and ensuring he respected track limits throughout the day, Chaimongkol certainly felt a top three placing was more than achievable.

Across the other side of the garage, 18-year-old Canadian racer Megan Gilkes delivered a very strong account of herself on not only her maiden outing in a British F3 Tatuus-Cosworth, but also on her first ever visit to Donington Park.

Utilising the test as key seat-time before the final evaluations for the brand new female-only W Series, which take place in Spain next month, Gilkes made significant progress throughout the day and worked incredibly well with the Hillspeed engineers.

Gaining huge chunks of time in each of the three sessions, the Ontario driver improved by almost six seconds during the day as her confidence and competitiveness visibly increased – culminating in a final session quickest time of 1m26.975 seconds (102.95mph).

Reflecting on an excellent day, Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw said: “We’re very pleased indeed with the performance delivered throughout the test by Cutter, he was on it from the very start and confirmed the potential we know he has to be fighting for regular podiums this year in his second season of F3.

“Second quickest in session one, fastest in session two and then top six in the last one showed excellent consistency and it could have been more still. Some drivers weren’t fully respectful of the track limits in the last run of the day, we were, and so with that in mind we take a lot of positivity from the day.”

He added: “It was a delight to work with Megan, she put in a huge amount of work and made exceptional progress over the course of the three sessions. For her first visit to Donington, her first time in the car, we were very pleased indeed with the performance she delivered. There is certainly some great potential to build on.”

With just over six weeks to go until the start of the 2019 BRDC British F3 Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire, between Saturday, 20th April, and Easter Monday, 22nd April, Hillspeed is stepping up its preparations with a substantial test schedule in place.
