Impressive Formula 3 Rookie Varrone Returns At Spa This Weekend
Hugely impressive Formula 3 rookie Nico Varrone is to make a very welcome return to BRDC British Formula 3 Championship action with Hillspeed this coming weekend, 20th/21st July, as the category kicks-off the second half of its 2019 season at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
Hathersage’s Hillspeed, which gave 18-year-old Varrone his British F3 debut at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit last month, is thrilled to have the Argentinian back onboard for rounds 13, 14 and 15 where he will team-up once again with Sasakorn ‘Cutter’ Chaimongkol.
Varrone certainly made heads turn the last time he was on the British F3 grid in June at the home of the British Grand Prix, producing outstanding pace and a series of remarkable performances on his maiden visit to the track – which also marked his first ever outing in the Tatuus-Cosworth F3 car.
Starting out with the seventh fastest time in a wet opening practice, Varrone went on to qualify inside the top 10 and while an unfortunate puncture – following contact from a rival – badly impacted the first race, in the second encounter he delivered a great drive to take a weekend best fourth position.
Having been so impressive during his previous appearance in the championship, hopes are now high for a similarly strong showing on the Argentinian’s first visit to Spa and he is absolutely relishing the challenge which will be provided by the world-famous track.
Additionally too, Varrone is also set to participate in the final two race meetings of the British F3 season – the return trip to Silverstone on 17th/18th August and then the championship finale at Donington Park on 14th/15th September.
“It’s fantastic to be back with Hillspeed in British F3 this weekend and I can’t wait to arrive at Spa, it’s going to be incredible racing at such a famous and demanding track”, said Varrone, “I’m also looking forward to building on the great relationship we started with the Hillspeed guys at Silverstone.
“I have to say a huge thank you to my manager José Manuel Balbiani and my sponsor +Vida for their support, this wouldn’t be possible without them. Our debut at Silverstone went very well, so I’m aiming for even more at Spa this weekend.”
In the sister Hillspeed car, Sasakorn ‘Cutter’ Chaimongkol will arrive in Belgium with confidence very high after securing his long awaited first podium of the British F3 season last time out at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit – from sixth on the grid.
Spa, of course, is a track where the Thai racer has impressed in the past and last year he book-ended a podium finish during the second of the weekend’s three races with two other top 10 results. This time around, more silverware is the clear target.
“We are very happy to see Nico back with us for the start of the second half of the season and we’re all looking forward to working with him again, hopefully building on the fantastic foundations we laid together at Silverstone”, said Hillspeed’s Richard Ollerenshaw, “With Cutter on the podium at Donington a few weeks ago, we’re all heading to Spa with a lot of positivity.”
Following three practice sessions at Spa on Friday, 19th July, qualifying will get underway at 17.05 (local time) with the first race of the weekend taking place on Saturday, 20th July, at 12.40 (local time). On Sunday, 21st July, race two will begin at 09.35 (local time) with race three scheduled to get underway at 15.00 (local time).
