Hillspeed Warmly Welcomes Newly Announced Upgrades To British F3 Car For Next Season
Multiple race-winning BRDC British Formula 3 Championship team Hillspeed has warmly welcomed today’s announcement regarding the introduction of an upgraded car package for the 2020 season, with bodywork modifications and key safety improvements to the popular Tatuus F3 chassis.
Championship organiser MotorSport Vision (MSV) has worked closely with the Italian constructor to deliver a number of updates to the existing and highly proven car, with the main changes including an Indycar-style fin in front of the driver, upgrades to front and rear wings, plus a new engine cover.
Front wing endplates will feature an updated design which, combined with changes to the installation of the wing, will enable greater set-up variation in terms of downforce with an increased level than currently exists.
Around the cockpit area, a fin will be placed in front of the driver which acts as a secondary roll structure and also deflects debris away in the event of any incidents. Each chassis will be modified by MSV in association with Tatuus to accommodate the device, which has been load tested.
Bargeboards will also be added to the cars in front of the side pods, while a new engine cover will be fitted – the latter will be much slimmer in an effort to reduce drag and improve airflow to the rear wing, with a contemporary fin included along the spine.
These changes to the engine cover will improve the efficiency of the rear wing, which includes new profiles for both the carbon fibre main plane and flap with in-mode angled back endplates. As a result, an overall higher rear downforce set-up will be possible.
Over the winter months, each car will also receive an electrical upgrade in order to ensure the championship’s outstandingly high reliability level is maintained. MSV anticipates upgrades will be available from early January 2020, allowing teams to conduct a full pre-season testing programme.
Commenting on the upgrades, Hillspeed team principal Richard Ollerenshaw said: “I’m absolutely delighted with how MSV has chosen to upgrade and update an already great car. The existing Tatuus we have worked with in BRDC British F3 has proven to be a fantastic car, with great reliability, so the 2020 upgrades can only make the championship an even more serious consideration for drivers looking to progress their career.”
Jonathan Palmer, Chief Executive of MSV, said: “he existing Tatuus chassis has proven itself as a very dependable car with superb performance and our teams are extremely happy to continue using it.
“Working in coordination with the teams, we have agreed on this upgrade package that ensures the car will remain at the forefront of European junior single seater racing, while potentially unlocking a little more performance. Given the current health and level of competitiveness of the BRDC British F3 Championship, we expect the updates to make the car and series even more appealing for young drivers on the path F1.
